This scientific contraption has been working hard since it was installed in 2017. Yet,
perplexed park visitors no longer need to scratch their heads about what it is and why it is situated in Legacy Park! It is a rain gauge, one of seven maintained by the City of Greenville Engineering Department, and supplies weather data for specific areas, rivers, and creeks. In early March 2025, the City of Greenville Parks Recreation and Tourism erected a neat wooden fence around the base of the structure and added two signs to educate people about its purpose. It is powered by a 30-watt solar panel and includes a rainfall collector gauge, a cellular modem, and a data logger. Rainfall information is captured in real-time and published to the website that is accessible through a QR code on the identification sign at the weather station. City engineers use rainfall and stream monitoring data to understand and improve water quality in the Reedy River and within the Saluda Watershed.
